The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is known both nationally and internationally for excellence in technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial consultancy. A faculty of international repute, a highly motivated and brilliant student community, excellent technical and supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The Institute is proud to bear the laureate of being No.1 engineering university in India. More recently, IIT Madras has been given the title of Institute of Eminence.

The Department of Ocean Engineering (DOE) at IIT Madras, established in 1977 and elevated to an academic department in 1982, has been a leader in ocean engineering education and research. Offering B.Tech and Dual Degree programs in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, M.Tech programs in Ocean Engineering, Ocean Technology, and Petroleum Engineering, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. programs, the DOE is renowned for its ground breaking technological advancements and comprehensive training in various ocean engineering disciplines. The department was ranked 37th globally in the 2019 Shanghai Global Ranking for Ocean and Marine Engineering. It boasts a 3000m² laboratory and a distinguished faculty of 25 members.
